Guillaume Neuville invites his wife and ex-wife to his Aunt Camilla Tressilian's house in Pointeaux-Mouettes to spent the end of summer vacation. Things couldn't get worse when the two ladies start to get on each other's nerves. His aunt was reluctant to have both of them under the same roof at first, but she being an open-minded widow of a magistrate, gave in. Aunt Camilla Tressilian is also torn between her fondness for Guillaume whom she raised like a son and the tenderness she feels for Aude, a sensitive woman who keeps all her feelings and emotions well hidden. This strange family reunion takes a tragic turn when Mrs Tressilian is found murdered in her bed one morning, her skull shattered.
